Not thrive, but they seem to survive really well in the shopping areas. Be all eyes and ears particularly in the Stazione Centrale, where they usually work through diversions. Pretending it's crowded, they just push towards you and their hands land in your pockets! If you do your zippers up, and pay attention when the platform is hectic, it will all be fine.
