arnold's question:
Is it that castle in Sirmione a must-see? My family wants to drive there on the Christmas holiday...(give a different answer) .
Yes, it's lovely because of its setting - two miles into Lake Garda, the largest in Italy, and reachable only through a drawbridge. It was constructed in the 13th century by the della Scalla family, also known as Scaligeri. The Lake District attracted Rome's grand people over the centuries, including the hedonist poet Catullus, who came here for the sulfur baths and nature graced landscape. The ruins of his summer villa are believed to be the Grotte di Catullo.
