First try to stop at Piazzeta di San Marco because there you'll see the biggest and the most important palace in Venice. As the name says the Palazzo Ducale was for centuries the official residence of the doges. It was built in the 9th century but it look like this since from 1419, when it was inaugurated. It is open for visitors daily bet 9am & 7pm. Entrance isn't much... less than 5 euro.
